Students Want BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

by Jean Tower

It’s no surprise to me that students want to bring their own mobile device to school and use it. What is surprising is how young the access to mobile devices begins!

This graph is from the article, “What Do Kids Say Is The Biggest Obstacle To Technology At School?” 21% of kids in grades K-2 have a cell phone and 37% have a laptop? Expectations of this group of students are not going to match what most schools still want to allow and control. This is not something schools can duck for long. Instead, let’s work to embrace mobile devices and work through the issues sooner rather than later.

CoSN has a Leadership for Mobile Learning Initiative:

“CoSN’s newest initiative, Leadership for Mobile Learning (LML), will address the capacity of district leadership to overcome the barriers and develop, plan, implement and manage policies to effectively use mobile devices for the improvement of teaching and learning.”

There are lots of great resources here for the district leader who is either wading in slowly or has already jumped into the deep end.
